Send your own personal message into space!
To celebrate the United Nations declared World Space Week, you can send your own special message into deep space. It will be transmitted from British Telecom's satellite earth station at Goonhilly in the UK and it will travel through space forever. Your message will pass the moon just 1.3 seconds after being transmitted, it will pass the Sun eight minutes later and it will pass Pluto and leave our solar system after just 15 hours. That's because your message will be traveling at the speed of light - 671,000,000 miles per hour!
For schools there is a special competition where you can be one of the first classes to send a message into space. The 10 most creative entries will be selected and given the chance to send a 2Mb message with their own words, images and sounds across the Universe. For more information, see here.
What is UN-declared World Space Week? It is an international celebration of science and technology, and their contribution to the betterment of the human condition. The United Nations General Assembly declared in 1999 that World Space Week shall be held each year from October 4-10. These dates commemorate two events: October 4, 1957, the launch of the first human-made Earth satellite, Sputnik 1, thus opening the way for space exploration and October 10, 1967, the signing of the UN Treaty on Principles Governing the Activites of States in the Exploration and Peaceful Uses of Outer Space, including the Moon and Other Celestial Bodies.
Where and how is World Space Week celebrated? It is open to all. Government agencies, industry, non-profit organizations, teachers, even individuals can organize events to celebrate space. This week is coordinated by the United Nations with the support of World Space Week Association and local coordinators in many countries.
